Fuel/Energy Efficiency Calculator

Compare what effect changes that you can make will cut down on fuel costs!
LED's are all about energy efficiency. So we thought we'd diverge a bit to help with rising pump prices.

With gasoline prices over $3.00 today, everything we do to improve our mileage will really affect your wallet. It's better to have our hard earned money stay in our wallet, than the fattest wallets of the big oil companies. As long as our government continues to support big oil as a profit center for the fabulously rich and not treat it as a national security issue, we all must pay what the economy demands. It's true - supply and demand will continue to drive the price of fuel.

Take a look at the calculators below to help you reduce your overall fuel costs for your automobile. Type in your specific fuel consumption information on the cars you drive and see how much you can save by making some simple changes in your driving habits.

Local cost of gasoline
($ per gallon)
Current MPG Current daily commute (round trip miles)

Expected improvements and impact on expensesSavings
Average Daily cost of commute (round trip)$/day
Average Annual cost of commute (50 weeks)$/yr
Effects of changes in your driving habits
Car pooling (2 days/week for 50 weeks) $/yr $/yr
Tune Up and accurate tire pressure (5% improvement) $/yr $/yr

Let's see what the dollar impact would be if we made small changes in our use of gasoline for our cars alone. Let's face it, a 20-gallon tank costs $60 to fill. If you commute to work in a vehicle that gets 18 mpg, every mile costs you significantly more than it did last year. When gasoline at the pump was $2.25 per gallon, that 18 mpg car used on average, 12.5 cents of gas every mile. a 40 mile round trip commute used to cost you $5. Now, with prices hitting $3.25 per gallon, every mile you drive costs you 18 cents and your 40 mile commute now costs you $7.20! You are spending $2.20 more every day. So while the trip used to cost $5 per day, it now costs $7.20.

Ok. While not exactly rocket science we have a couple of approaches to reduce this extra cost. The obvious ones are to use your car less, buy a new one with better milage ratings, try car pooling, or use public transportation more. What else can you do? What about a tune up? How much will that save? How about using your on-board computer to help you drive more efficiently. Take a peek at the "instantaneous mpg' display found on many cars. Can you appreciate what it is telling you? How can you use that information to your advantage?
